Strategically most important city for Bosnian-Croat federation during the war: all U.N help that could not be delivered by air-lifts came through Split - the second largest Croatian port. Road from Split to Mostar is Croatian controlled and road from Mostar to Tuzla is Bosnian-Muslim controlled. This link was always relatively safe from Serb attacks. Split was the launching pad for all journalists venturing into Bosnia during the war. Split is home of Croatia's most popular indepenednt political satire weekly Feral Tribune. The logistics support team for Operation Joint Endeavor will also be housed in Split.
